Ik sluit me aan bij het motto "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

- RESPONSE FROM PETTIT RACING

In reference to the article appearing in the November issue of Motor Trend magazine, we at Pettit Racing feel it's necessary to clarify our position on the article and to inform our valued customers about the false and misprinted information.

Motor Trend was given a unique and wonderful opportunity to unveil the first forced induction RX-8, but instead they took our pre-production test vehicle, damaged it and then went on to write an article filled with false information.

On their first day of testing the test driver (who will remain un named) chose to perform a drag launch for their first test and managed to spin and over heat the stock clutch allowing air into the system. Once that was repaired, they continued with the test, only to completely lock up and destroy the stock transmission (with only 11,000 miles on it), to make things worse, when parking the car the test driver drove into a curb cracking new Pettit Racing nose. This consequently ended our day of testing.

Fortunately, we were able to get a new transmission and clutch from Mazda Competition, and have a local shop replace the damaged components. However, in doing so, they missed replacing a vacuum line, which consequently hurt the idle, and drivability. We decided to let Motor Trend re test the car again, in doing so they said that they would foot note the reason for the problems, as you can see by the article, they didn't.

In the article Motor Trend claims that the stock RX-8 ran the quarter mile in 14.5 seconds @ 95.4 mph, however in any actual testing that we have seen or read about the stock RX-8 runs about 15 seconds @ 89 mph. Our car ran 14.1 seconds @ 99.3 mph, almost 1 second faster and 10 mph faster; a substantial difference. Motor trend also claims that our $1950.00 brake kit adds three feet, but the test car that they drove had stock brakes, with the exception of a $400.00 set of slotted rotors all around - a far cry from $1950.00 !!!

Finally Motor Trend's testing on the skid pad and in the slalom course revealed that the car had a bit of over steer. This could be accurate, but with only very little time on the suspension we are sure that we could have made more improvements had we have had more set up time. However, with the little time that we had, the results were still better than the stock car.

Since the test was performed about six weeks ago, we have made many changes and improvements to the kit allowing for even better drivability and more power. Our base non intercooled kit, which is being tested on some customer cars right now, uses about 6 psi of boost and makes over 200 hp to the wheels. The kit will retail for about $3600.00 - not $5000.00 as claimed in the article. There will be a high boost, air-to-air intercooled version available soon, but no test results or prices have been release yet.

Two hurricanes couldn't put us out of business, neither can Motor Trend!!!
