Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday it had yet to estimate operational and financial damage from a fire at a major plant in Japan that caused the factory and another nearby operation to close.
"We completely shut down our Ujina 1 factory and Ujina 2, which are two of our main factories," a Mazda spokesman said.
"We do not know when we can resume their operations and how much damage we will see as a result of the fire," he said.
The fire broke out at around 11:00 pm Wednesday in the paint drying furnace of Ujina 1 plant in Hiroshima city, 650 kilometers (400 miles) southwest of Tokyo, before being extinguished after 6:00 am Thursday. The fire was contained in the factory, but Mazda also closed the operation of Ujina 2, which is located right next to the plant, the automaker said. Ujina 1, with an annual production capacity of 268,000 autos, is used to build the RX-8 sports car, the popular compact cars Demio and Verisa as well as MPV minivan.

Ujina 2 mainly builds Demio and has the annual production capacity of 236,000. No one was injured in the blaze. Mazda stock fell 3.1 percent to 315 yen after the news of the fire that halted production at two plants reached the Japanese Market.

About 8,000 square meters of the 45,600-square-meter coating facility was burned down.
Mazda had suspended production lines at the No. 1 plant as well as at the adjacent No. 2 plant to ensure safety for employees but it resumed operations at the No. 2 plant Thursday morning, while it is considering having other plants take over production for the No. 1 plant, company officials said.
The assembly of about 470 cars scheduled at the two plants has been suspended, according to Mazda.
The fire started near a paint-drying furnace of the No. 1 plant, which has a floor space of about 180,000 square meters and is located east of Hiroshima port.
The cause of fire is yet to be determined as the firefighters were unable to approach the site immediately as the area was filled with the smell of gas.

Mazda Plant to Be Operational in April

Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday a plant damaged by a fire in December has been mostly repaired and will be back in full production by April.

Mazda, which is 33.4 percent owned by Ford Motor Co. of the United States, also said the production loss from the fire at the Ujina No. 1 plant in western Japan is expected to total 30,000 vehicles, an improvement over the initial estimate for a 70,000 vehicle loss. Rebuilding efforts have gone more quickly than expected because of construction using prefabricated steel frame units, the Hiroshima-based automaker said in a statement. Production of several models, including the RX-8 sportscar and Demio compact, will resume by the middle of next month, according to Mazda. The Dec. 15 fire broke out in the paint shop of Ujina No. 1. The plant's operations were partially resumed last month. Mazda has boosted production at two other plants to maintain overall vehicle production in Japan. Mazda has achieved a turnaround under its alliance with Ford and has produced successful models in recent years.
